WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR HEALTH

9:26 AM

This might make you yawn (ba-dum-tss)

But let me just say that sleep is oh so important! Why, you may ask?

RECOVERY. Your body needs to recover after your daily activities and especially from your workouts. Talk to any coach, bodybuilder, trainer etc. they will all tell you the same thing.

The reason we need to recover is because during our workouts, muscle tissue is broken down so it can be repaired, making the muscle denser and bigger/stronger. Sleep can restore our body by promoting muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis and the release of growth hormones. This ONLY occurs during sleep. So as you may tell, sleep is as important as your training and your nutrition.

So, how much sleep do you need?Studies show that around 6-8 hours of sleep is adequate.

What are the signs you're sleep deprived?- yawning excessively and at inappropriate times
- waking up feeling sluggish
- feeling drowsy in the afternoon
- lack of concentration
- lack of appetite OR excessive hunger

Tips for getting a good night sleep:- don't have any caffeine 4-6 hours before going to bed
- switch off from all social media 30 minutes before bed
- create a time you'll go to bed and a time you'll wake up. This will get your body in a routine.
- try to avoid long day time naps (unless you really need it)

And that my friends, is the story of the why, what and how of sleep.

Adios!

  1. My friends laugh at me because I schedule a daily nap. This happens during the school year because my kids aren't always quiet when off on summer break (I get one or two in though) Even if I don't actually nap, I'm able to relax and have some down time for my body.
